About

This is Snoring Dog Studio. Watercolorist, illustrator, writer, living at the base of the Boise foothills with two naughty, often nice, Boston Terriers. I’ve been painting and drawing for more than 30 years and I just can’t stop myself. I live with this addiction everyday.

My watercolors can be seen and purchased at www.snoringdogstudio.com. You can purchase originals or prints on the snoringdogstudio site.

  1. Your work is amazing! I just spent the past hour looking at all your pieces–very nice! I am so jealous–you are so luck to be able to paint every day!
Have you done any published illustrations?

    Reply
    • Thank you so much! Yes, I’ve gotten some illustrations that were published – as part of my job rather than through freelance. Painting is my true interest and passion. I’m thrilled that you took the time to look!

  3. I just looked through your pieces. How wonderfully talented you are. I can’t even draw a straight line with a ruler. The colors are so soothing. I love your blog.

  4. I love that photo! I am a dog lover, too (check out the video link — my “little personal and sentimental movie-making project” — on my latest blog post) and I actually drove out to Idaho to get my latest dog, a Border Collie cross. She is my heart and soul. You make awesome dogs in Idaho! :)

  6. Do you ever draw your dogs? Where can I see your art? I can’t even draw stick people. REally.

    • Once in a while, yes, I do, but it’s difficult to stop hugging them long enough to paint them! You can see my other paintings at http://www.snoringdogstudio.com. I think I have one of me with three boston terriers. I love your blog – what a great concept. I’m going back to read more.

      • Glad you like my blog! Thanks for the link to your art; I’ll take a look. My dog gets lots of love around here; she also sleeps a lot so I took a few different pics and emailed them to the artist. I found him on a forum and read that he passed away. I’m so thankful to have that beautiful picture.

  7. Hello, just popped over to say hi. I’ve had a flood of subscriptions being on Freshly pressed so I do want to respond to everyone. You have a most beautiful blog! It’s lovely to meet so many creatives too!

  8. Just got done cruising through your archives a bit; mostly checking out your watercolors. I especially like the surreal, vision-like aspect of your work. But then again that’s my bias. Do you pencil a rough sketch first and then work into or just let it rip with the water colors alone??

    Reply
    • Thank you, again, hansi! I always do a pencil drawing first – in fact, I never erase the underlying drawing. I love the pencil drawing as much as the finished watercolor and I want people to see that drawing skill is important. Well, it’s important to me. I’m convinced that if the underlying structure isn’t there, it doesn’t matter how technically skilled you are with the painting medium – it’s still going to look like a poorly executed piece. I spend more time on the drawing than the painting itself. I’m so happy to have found a reader that likes to talk art!

  9. Hey there. Your paintings are incredible! I finally took one college art course last year on a whim (I have never even drawn before, let alone painted) and I fell in love with it. I didn’t attempt watercolor though, looks intimidating to me.

    • Why, thank you, miraclemama! How nice of you to say so and to stop by and look. Believe me, I’ve spent decades getting better at watercolor and still feel like I need to learn more and improve my craft. It’s a lifetime pursuit. I’m glad you stopped by!

  10. Nice artwork. Very expressive. I took some art classes as electives when I was in college back in the 1990s and would love to get back into it — especially sculpture.

    • Having a creative outlet, Ben, is what saves me from just losing it these days. I also do a lot of heavy gardening. Haven’t added drinking excessively to the list, yet, but this week’s events are leaning that way. I’ve never done sculpture because I lack that 3D capability. I admire sculptors a ton, though!

  12. Hi SDS, one of your comments on Priya’s blog brought me to your’s.

‘ I hang on to control as though it were a lifeline, keeping me from suffering all sorts of imaginary disasters and temptations. And, because of that, I forget to live in the moment and to treasure unexpected pleasures. I am so afraid of losing control, I won’t even relax into a massage. ‘

I identified with your words so much that I had to come and meet you :) Your drawing caught my attention the first, especially the eyes. I will be back to read.

  14. HI Jean,

I’ve been loving your latest posts. My blog, Middle of the Freakin Road, is on your blog roll. I just wanted to let you know that I’ve semi-retired that web site. My wife and I left in August to travel around the world for a year. My new blog about that journey is at http://www.changesinlongitude.com/ It’s about people of a certain age chucking all their possessions to just take off. Perhaps you’d care to put that one in your blog roll instead?
Either way, thanks so much and keep on writing!

  25. Got your site from freshly pressed, and liked, no, love your water-colour paintings from your online gallery. Not necessarily the subject, but more to the colour spread. Will show them to my 11 years old daughter when I return back home this weekend. She can definitely learn a hell of a load from your paintings; shadow and all. B-)

    Thank you for sharing them.

  27. Love your artwork! Watercolor is so tricky, and you make it look like a piece of cake. It’s my favorite, though I never paint anymore. :( What sort of paper do you use? (And, pssst, I clicked on the RedBubble link and it didn’t work.)

    Reply
    • Thank you, AA! I use 300 lb Arches cold pressed but I like hot pressed paper, too. I also use YUPO once in a while. It has a very slick surface so it’s quite tricky. Thank you for the heads up on Red Bubble. I closed that account not too long ago.

I have only been painting for about one year, so I am a beginner learning how to handle these gorgeous tubes of color. I love that you draw before you put brush to paper. I admire the clean, crisp, free spirit of your amazing work. Have an artful day! Marian
